(no subject)
Oct. 1st, 2003 08:46 pmI am now back at the lovely University of Washington.
It's fun. Tiring too. I missed being up in Seattle. Having everything in walking distance, or being able to take the bus someplace.
Move in day was horrendous though. UW sort of forgot to mention that they were holding orientation for freshmen on the first day. So what was supposed to be a busy day turned into a madhouse of thousands of freshmen moving in at the same time.
I'm now living on the north side of campus. For some reason, that required a zip code change.
Haggett Hall, my new residence hall, just yearns to be the oddest dorm on campus. First, apparently at the time it was built, there was a shortage of right angled corners because Haggett was built with as few as possible. Every room has 6 walls. There's no ceiling light, only a small light over a mirror on the wall. (There used to be desk lights, but I heard they had to be removed due to abestos. Nice.) And they just upgraded it so that there are 3 outlets in the room. For two people. In the age of computers and electronics.

This is from the floor plans. The blue things are the beds. Across from the window, above the bed, is a large vent with a little door. This is so that we get air, but can't look into straight into our neighbors' rooms. The distance between the window and the outside wall is only a couple of feet. Though considering the showers, I'm surprised they went through the trouble.
Showers:

Ahahaha. I really now try to avoid taking it when other people are taking them. Instead of separate piping, it's all in the middle with spouts pointing into each "stall." You really can't get too close to the showerhead without saying hello to everybody.
Other than the showers (What were they thinking?) I really like it here. It's friendly and there's plenty of storage. And the closets are wonderful.
Apparently there was some riot over near Greek Row early Sunday morning. A bunch of drunk people (numbering in the hundreds, I hear) got rowdy, overturned a volvo, built a bonfire, and threw rocks/bottles at the police. How did I find out?
A) I was there. (ahahahaha. sure)
B) I heard the sirens/noise from the event as the event was located less than a mile north of my dorm.
C) Everybody was talking about it on campus.
D) I saw it on the news/in the papers.
E) None of the above
Answer: E. Actually, my parents called on Tuesday and mentioned it, asking what I knew. And I was like, What? Riot? Where? Obviously, I am very aware of what's going on around here.
(Eeek. 15 more minutes until Spike.)
