Smart Girl, You study hard
Sep. 29th, 2002 09:57 pmWow, days go past. I just feel like explaining away my days.
Busy somewhat. I meant to update before but got sidetracked by stuff. Friday was the first UW dawg whatever thing, where they had activities/stuff planned in front of the hub. That was boring for a while but then this girl got me to boff with her. Heh. Boffing. (sorry, the 12 year old inside just welled up for a second). Boffing is basically sword/stick fighting except the weopons are padded with duct tape. The point of it is to kill your opponent by either getting him on the head, the torso, or by getting 3 of their limbs. And if you hit their limb, they lose it, which makes for amusing fighting when you run out of legs. Or arms. I hung out there for a couple of hours, then walked home with the girl, who's a buffy fan, so that was cool.
Now the past two days have been less fun. Yesterday, I ran into a friend from high school who lives in a dorm next to mine. She asked me along with her and her friends and so I joined them. We hung out and that was fun, but then after dinner, we, and a friend of another girl walked around and for some reason, I felt obligated to stay with them. Big mistake. The two girls kept looking for something to do, a party or something. Just not at the frats. So we went to my friend's dorm, the girl's friend's dorm, another person's dorm, and even walked around Terry saying hi to people with open doors. And it went on. My feet hurt. When they finally decided on going to a school mixer (ouch, at a dorm in north campus, when we lived in south campus) I just gave up and departed company. So I wasted the whole night walking around, when I could have been doing something more entertaining to me.
This morning was the school's convocation. I thought it was a big deal (or somewhat important) so I didn't object when my parents decided to come. On campus, I discovered it wasn't important at all and that nobody I knew were going, or having their parents go. But since it was too late to tell my parents to cancel (especially since my father took work off for it) I just used it as a way to get them to bring me stuff I forgot. Which was a lot. But I did get brought up a case of Ramen (ah, a college staple), some orange juice, the cable wire, the HP books and the S3-S6 tapes I didn't bring (though my parents forgot and brought every tape I had, even S1 & 2) Still, they all fit in my drawer, so it's all good.
Anyway, the convocation sucked. First, we were late because Denny's took too long. We entered about 10:50, didn't even get to order until 11:20 and didn't get our food until 11:55. All this made us late for the convocation and so when we got there, I guess it was fool and we had to go to a lecture hall to watch the live video feed of it on a screen. Ew. It was so lame though. People actually clapped when the real audience did. It's frickin' screen. No one can see the clapping. You don't have to act like the official audience. One parent was even using a video camera to tape the video. The guy introduced stuff, and started introducing "important people." (Whoever made up the ceremony back in whatever, are one of the most self-important people in the world. They created a ceremony to welcome people who pay to go where they get to dress up in pretty robes and play with official wands and force them to listen to them talk.) It went on. And on. I was wondering when they were going to introduce the janitor. Or maybe the person who cuts the hair of the person who set up the lights. That finally ended and the some students came up and talked. I felt bad for the girl who tried to get audience participation. They just weren't feeling it. Plus she didn't have the confidence to pull it off. The official main speaker finally came on and talked. And when the speaker asked students or someone to stand up, people in the lecture room stood also. ::sigh:: It did end, eventually.
And to do that, the introducer ceremoniously grabbed his wand and we left.
I amused myself by writing discriptions in the booklet they gave us, but I think I left it in the car. Crap.
Hee, my subject line amuses me. I just remembered the experience. I was getting dinner at a teriyaki place and the guy who served me (I think he was the owner) was making small talk. He seemed very stereotypically asian. He kept saying how I obviously was smart to get into UW (they tightened up the admission standards, I heard) etcetera... And when I left with my food, he yelled, "Study hard, smart girl." I didn't know what to say so I just left.
On the roommate front, I'm doubting much that we'll become good friends. It started off well enough, but it has cooled since. Maybe my Buffy obsession has finally scared her off. (hee, it could have been the action figures) We have kind of a live and let live thing going. We live in the same room and that's it. We make small talk occasionlly but nothing more. Ah well.
Dammit, class starts tomorrow. And I still don't have my books. Though that's also because of financial aid and me not understanding it. I turned in my papers later then I should have and so I haven't gotten money for the books. They cost more than what's in my checking account, so I can't buy it just yet. But now I have to go by the financial aid office and have them explain this all to me. ::sigh again:: I do not get financial crap. Or economics. Just give me my damn money and let me spend it is my philosophy.
