Firefly and randomness
First of all, let me say Firefly kicks ass. A long time ago, I was wary of Joss' strange idea for a show (although I knew I'd have to tune in, because duh, Joss) However, I warmed up to it quickly. I think Fox sucks in that they gave it such a crappy timeslot (No show, I've been told, especially sci-fi, has survived at that time to become a success in quite a while) and expected it to perform miracles. They had better take into account the time slot's suckitude before they decide to continue or cancel the show.
And so I'm actually participating in the efforts to save the show. I'm emailing Fox. I even spent time creating a postcard to to mail in. (Hee. Someone at TWOP suggested sending in blue rubber gloves to Fox if they actually cancel the show. (If you had watched Ariel, you'd get it))
Now on to
The beginning seemed normal, routine. They were stopping by a planet (Ariel, core alliance planet) eating dinner ("It smells like crotch" Oh Jayne what would we do without your, uh, lovely discriptions?) River was slashing uncouth men with knives. All in a normal day.
Then *Bam* Simon comes up with this wacky plan of stealing medicine from a hospital to sell for lots of money on the border planets. Hee. "So we're gonna steal from the rich and sell to the poor?"
The rest of the episode was very intense. I was on the edge of my seat hoping the crew would get out of the alliance filled hospital alive. Especially after Jayne (stupid Jayne) sold River and Simon out to the alliance folk. And when they got captured, I had no clue how'd they get out of the mess.
And dude, those blue hand guys are so frickin' scary. When they came by to collect River, they looked like no threat at all. And when they pulled out that blue wand, I thought they were just going to make the alliance folk forget, like in Men in Black (that's what the thing looked like, except held sideways) but, ewww... it kinda made the victims bleed from every orifice (even the eyes) and scream in what sounds to be like immense pain.
But they escaped. Got lucky.
Now I love Mal even more. He is the coolest captain ever. He beats the Enterprise's captain to a pulp, spits on his grave, and makes his children cry in mercy, he's just that cool. He knows how to handle his crew, he knows how to give orders and be firm when he has to be. He keeps morale up, is willing to suffer for his crew, remains loyal to them and expects that loyalty back. And he's hot.
In one of the final scenes, when he punishes Jayne because of his betrayal, he locks Jayne in the cargo bay with the bay door opened. The bay door that leads to the outside, The outside that would soon change from nice oxygen-y atmosphere to vacuum-y space. I really thought Mal was going to let Jayne die, let him get blown out of the back of the ship. Although in the end he closed the door, because Jayne showed that one small ounce of understanding and regret, it really hit home how close he was to just letting Jayne go.
Hm, on an odd unrelated note, apparently there's a lot of hoyay in this show. Beyond Inara/Kaylee, I really don't see it. Though I'm not sure if that really says anything since I don't really see the Clark/Lex thing either. (However, I've only seen the pilot and a small parts of other eps.)
Other things: I'm going to see Harry Potter Saturday. Yay! Bought advanced tickets and everything. 5.25 isn't too bad for a matinee (plus a 1.00 ticket surcharge for using moviefone.com) and the theater isn't too far from here.
I'm going to be so beat, movie-wise. They're having an 8:00 pm showing of LOTR: Extended version at the residence hall next door.
I really should, like work on my 2 essays due Monday. The first one needs to be edited, the second one needs to be written. Though I just plan to use the same essay from the writing class for the philosophy class with some tweakings.
Another random note: I was reading the Daily, and the guy who created Livejournal did it while he was at the UW. And he lived in Mercer, where it started spreading. Things I didn't know...
